"Remember Allensbank Primary School, 1948-1954?"

Allensbank was a short walk from Canada Road, my first home in Cardiff; at 5 years I started in late 1948 as a pupil - although I went to Greenhill for a term or two as a child with rickets, I restarted at Allensbank and stayed there despite moving to other addresses across Cardiff and took the 11-plus in 1954. The classes were all run by lady teachers of some years, and whilst details are hazy, they are remembered with fondness, as they treated all us very young children with a homely comforting care.

Allensbank was just a little way from a large allotments area and at lunch-time we boys were free to leave the premises and play there - no mischief or locked gates in those days. They will know who they are, but I still remember the friends I made at that time,

Victor, Roger, David, "Oxo". and, not least Dorothy who sat next to me and Carol , who took me to her home just along the road, to mend her doll's house lighting - first buds of my life-long career in engineering perhaps. Sadly, we moved to London for my next school so lost all connections to the school and friends, though a brief visit in the early 2000's revived many happy memories and the teachers were just as friendly as those I remembered. I hope the school survives as it is well-placed, well built - none of the RAAC issues so common in more recent school buildings and certainly provided a sound start to so many young lives for over a hundred years..
